Goshen Historical Society - August 7, 2023 Meeting Minutes
The August meeting opened at 7:15 pm with the following members present: Ken Brown, Barb Brown, Galina Chernaya, Kathy Mathis, Madine Reed
There were no minutes from the July meeting as we couldn’t gain entrance to the Town Hall that evening. The July meeting had been rescheduled for Wednesday July 5th due to the holiday. Erin Van Auken and Madine talked informally outside until Galina Chernaya arrived. As we couldn’t get in and there were just the three of us, we visited for a bit longer and then as we were departing, Ken and Barb Brown arrived. We decided to forgo a meeting for July and pick up at the August meeting.
Galina reported on her findings from the Vt. Historical Society. She recently spoke with Eileen Corcaran, Director of Outreach for the VHS, who is willing to come and visit with us. Galina will make arrangements for either our Wednesday Sept. 6th meeting (rescheduled due to Labor Day being Monday) or the regular October 2nd meeting.
Barb has sent the application and check to join the VHS. As we weren’t sure we had formally voted to do so, Galena moved and Kathy seconded to have the GHS join the Vt Historical Society.
Galina has also spoken with Charles Billings of the Ripton Historical Society. They are willing to meet with us on the workings of a small historical society and suggest things that worked for them that may help us. The gathering in Ripton will take place either Aug. 16 or 23 at 2pm. Galena will let us know as soon as she has confirmation on which day they can meet with us.
The East Middlebury HS was contacted by Galina and we have been invited to their September meeting, at which time Max Kraus (former Goshen resident) will be speaking about his research/article on the ‘one-room schools of Addison County’. This will take place on Wed. Sept. 12th at 7pm. at their ‘Meeting House’ in East Middlebury on Rt.# 125.
August 1 had been the deadline for gathering pictures for our first ‘Goshen Calendar’ project. We now need to follow up and gather photos, digital e-mailed to:
Discussion took place on the T-shirts. Madine will bring info from Keith’s to share at our work session on the 23rd. Kathy discussed the work she has started on the grants search and elevator info. She will be attending the next Selectboard Meeting to discuss the project with them again.
The ‘Goshen old house/property- tour’ was discussed. We decided to make this a winter project to take place in the spring. Plus we can have time to gather more info for a possible flyer to go with it.
The meeting closed at 8:25 pm. Kathy moved – Galina second. All in favor.
Madine Brown Reed, Secretary Protem
Work session – August 23, 2023
Present: Ken and Barb Brown, Galina Chernaya, Kathy Mathis and Madine Reed.
We told Kathy the various things Ripton and East Middlebury shared with us when Galina, Ken, Barb and Madine met the folks in Ripton (with E. Middlebury HS present as well). Kathy was very excited about the grant possibility for signs for the Town Hall and the Town Office/School building. (The Pom xxxx) E. Middlebury shared a brochure they had designed for their ‘walking tour’. Ripton had one as well for theirs. More on that to be discussed at a future meeting.
We decided to put off until the September meeting or Sept. work session to do the pictures for the calendar as we need the e-mailed ones and time to gather more to look at.
T-shirt discussion:
The plan is to be: the monument on the front – (Dennis Marden’s sketch) full placement on the front - with the name on the upper left, front. The back to have names of donors to this project, in support of the GHS. The color green with white lettering was chosen, a mix of sizes with a total of 50 to start with; XXL – 6, XL-10, L-20, M-10, S-4. A letter to Goshen people was approved and Kathy will follow up with a draft letter and send it to us. We will get these out ‘asap’, once done. After we viewed the info from Mitchel’s and Keith’s and after some discussion, it was decided to go with Keith’s. Kathy will take our ‘plan’ for the T-shirt to ‘Keith’s’ in Pittsford, as she has to go for other business there soon. She will bring back details on the project at our next meeting or sooner if possible.
